Explore Tours

Enhance your Zoo visit with an exclusive walking tour led by a knowledgeable and engaging Zoo educator. Learn more about wildlife conservation or the science of the zoo on a 90-minute walking tour, and get a glimpse behind the scenes at some of your favorite areas of the Zoo. Two exciting themes are available: Conservation Story and Science of the Zoo. Tours are led at select days and times.

 

Health and Safety Information

The Virginia Zoo is committed to the health and safety of all our guests. While our staff will work hard to maintain proper social distancing, you may come within 6 feet of other guests or staff. Therefore, face masks are required for all guests over the age of 10 and highly recommended for any guests over the age of 2. Any guests experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or with a known COVID-19 exposure should not attend the program and will receive a full refund or placement in another program.

All areas are handicapped accessible and closed toe shoes are required. Don't forget to bring your camera!

Activities

Conservation Story - Asia

Conservation is critical to our mission here at the Virginia Zoo, in our own backyards, and around the world. On this tour, learn more about the challenges facing wildlife and how everyone can do their part to help.

Tours starting at 9am meet outside the gates; tours starting at 2pm meet at the Kugel Ball globe in the Zoo's plaza. Tours can take up to 8 people. There is no age restriction; under 2 are free. All tours include park admission. Space is limited.  Closed-toe shoes are required as are face masks for all those over 2 years of age.


Conservation Story tours typically take place on the Asia Trail of the Tiger. However, some areas may be closed or the tour route may be changed due to sensitive animal restrictions.

Dates:

Spring dates coming soon. We are focusing on the World of Reptiles during the colder months.

Science of the Zoo - World of Reptiles

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the Zoo, or how zoos became such important places for wildlife conservation? On this tour, learn more about the history of the Virginia Zoo and how science helps us provide the best care for our animals.

Tours starting at 9am meet outside the Zoo's front gate by the elephant statue, those starting at 2pm meet inside the Zoo at the kugel ball (globe) in the Plaza. Tours last approximately 90 minutes.
